Luthier’s Corner Stocked, More Transformers and a New Project!

UBG Patriot Logo

Hi All!

We’ve been a little distracted here at the shop… James and I started building our own guitars this year and we kinda had a flood of orders come in last month!  This week, a lot of time was dedicated to getting the guitars to finish ready, and I am VERY happy to say, the painter picked them up today!  Yay!  Working on guitars is definitely a labor of love.  There’s no short cuts and you either do it right, or it’s wrong.  It can be a frustrating course in wood working for the beginner.  Tooling is a big part of it, application is definitely the other.  There are all sorts of pesky instances that can add to the work load for one guitar.  This week we had to get 5 instruments ready for some bigger names in Country music and the instruments did not disappoint in creating all sorts of issues.

Aside from the usual ‘rider’ of celeb specifications, one order had an ‘F Hole’, one an over sized ‘C’ neck, another with radius variances and another with funky bridge specs.  Each completed stage is determined on the success of the one prior in building instruments.  In one example, after rough shaping, we realized there were cracks in the stock… we had to start over.  That’s frustrating when you don’t take the time to better examine the raw stock you’re using!  You can always fill cracks, but for us, and this being our second run, we wanted the instruments to be pretty flawless.  Now we spend a little more time with stock to make sure there are no flaws.  It’s a learning experience, even after a decade…

In just a couple of months, our shop has turned into a jungle routers, band saws, sanders, jigs, templates and more.  Without these basics, the job is pretty daunting.  With these basics, I guess the job is still pretty daunting!  haha!  Anyway, checkout www.jameshoodcustomguitar.com to see the models we’re making.  We’re finishing up a new LP design, a telecaster and a strat that will be out this summer.  Let us know what you think of the designs!  We’re pretty critical and want to build things that are worth while in the eyes of the people that play them, not just ourselves!  We’ll be uploading videos to Youtube showing the shop and how we cut shapes and the steps we take to make our lives a little easier in the process.  Stay tuned for the next episode of our Luthier’s Corner build too!  Speaking of which…

We loaded up our Luthier’s Corner Section with a bunch of new shells that need repair!  They’re all in different stages and have an array of pricing, so if you want a big project, or just want to do some basic fill and finish work, we gotcha covered!  These shells are a really rewarding experience to fix next to cost.  When done well, they play great and the materials used are nice!  Check out the category to see the new listings!  I know a few of you were hoping for some updates in this section, so here ya go!

We found a few more transformers!  Specifically, quantities of the 18W 120V units!  Those and a couple other Voltage options are now back in the ‘Transformers’ Category!  When these are gone, they’re gone.  We’re starting to wind down on our previous buys in inventory and are making room for new inventory hopefully soon to arrive!

The Nevin Audio boards have been doing great!  Big thanks to everyone that has ordered thus far.  They’re all shipped and we’re hoping to hear back on what YOU think they sound like, and how they perform!  We want to expand the offering to other Wattage and tube compliments.  We’re definitely going to do a ‘Bassman’ AB165 and at least a 18W design.  What other boards would you like to see?  We’re going to start working up plans for some Class D table top amps hopefully available before the end of the year too.  We’d love to hear your input on that as well!

Thanks so much for all of the support and feedback on the site!  We’re getting ready for the big overhaul on the site which will hopefully coincide with new inventory being put up!  Stay tuned for more detail on that and we’ll see you back here at UBuyGuitars.com!

More Color Options for JR Shells Moved to Final Price and Some Vintage Gear

UBG Patriot Logo

Hi Everyone,

Just a heads up to check out the ‘What’s New’ and ‘Final Price’ Categories this week!  We are down to the remainder of JR shells and they are now on discount for our final blowout!  We came across some additional vintagey acoustics that are really nice, so we added those to the ‘What’s New’ section.  This isn’t really our ‘schtick’, but we thought you guys might like them.  We’ll be adding to their descriptions as James continues to do some research on them.  There’s a lot of info out there on the guitars listed too!  As always, thanks so much for the support and the great feedback on the site.  We’re aware that some people either lost their passwords or entire profiles with the site updates!  We apologize for this and hope that if this happens to you, you’ll create a new account under the new encrypted settings.  Stay tuned as we’re going to be adding a bit to our ‘Luthier’s Corner’ this week!

Negotiated Shipping Rates Now LIVE, New Products Listed, Site Spring Cleaning and Security Update and MORE!

Hi All!

What a month it’s been!  It has been our pleasure to continue to bring you lots of great deals each week and monitor overall performance.  I wanted to stop and update you all on some milestones!

First, we did some ‘Spring Cleaning’ on the site and database side to help enhance site performance in fetch and overall speed.  This is in anticipation of a larger site update that will be happening in the next couple of months!  In doing so, pages are now loading faster, more relevance and accuracy is noticed in the search bar, expired or ‘out of stock’ items have been swept to make room for the new, and some miscellaneous glitches across the different platforms we use are now operating as intended!

One of the biggest enhancements is encryption!  Yes, the entire site is now in HTTPS!  This gives you additional security, as well as additional security for the site itself.  There are several layers of encryption in order to keep the site ‘light weight’ and fast!  Obviously the heaviest updated encryption is in checkout!  So surf freely!  We gotcha covered!

Next, our shipping rates through UPS just went live!  You should see a decent adjustment in shipping costs from here on out!  Yay!  This is particularly handy for larger items and shipping internationally!  To our friends abroad, Hello!  I’d like to personally welcome our customers from Australia!  They have been ordering from us directly as we were unable to advertise rates directly to the Continent.  Now, Australian customers can view shipping quotes freely, direct to their front door!

In light of these recent discounts being added to the site, we went ahead and Loaded the bigger gear back onto the site.  Annnnnd there’s quite a bit!  We’ve added about half of the products available to get started.  We’ve put all of these products under the ‘What’s New’ Section as well as their respective categories, and many of them are included in our ‘Make an Offer’ Category as well!  We wanna move this gear as soon as possible!  No reasonable offer will be refused!  Try us, I dare ya!

That’s all for now!  Thanks for all of the support and ongoing feedback.  Some of you should be or have received ‘review’ emails from us about products you’ve purchased in the past!  Those links should work now, and I encourage you to use them if possible so other users can see your experience with the products you buy from the site!  Additionally, with all of these updates, there’s bound to be an issue or two, a dead link, 500 error, etc.  Please let us know!  We want to know what we’re missing and are really grateful for all of the awesome feedback thus far!

New Handmade Nevin Audio 12W Tube Amp Circuit Boards Loaded Up!

Hey Guys,

We just added a listing, I started building the 12W boards from scratch using some better components and they sound pretty cool!  They look pretty neat too!  Old school fish paper was always kinda neat to see in the old Fender amps we work on, so I figured,’if it ain’t broken…).  Anyway, they have a premium on them, but might be cool to try out if you’re new to building or just want to expedite a build with some nicer components!  Check em out and let me know what you think!!

New Shipping Rates for Larger Packages and International Orders Coming + A ‘What’s New’ Category Added!

Hi All!

Just a heads up that somewhere in the middle of next week you should notice some pricing on shipping for larger items and orders outside of the US to drop!  Regular and smaller packages, depending on what and where they go, may decrease as well!  Yay!  Check back as we’ll be adding some of the larger items we’ve shy’d from to the page as well!

Big thanks to Damon for giving a request for ‘What’s New’!  Damon frequents the site and noted that it was annoying to have to sift through all of the listings to see the few things that have been added through the week.  No problem!  We think that’s a great idea!  I just loaded up some partially populated chassis in the new category to celebrate!!

We just did a little price drop on the JR shells in different colors other than brown and red too for those of you that asked if we’d be doing a sale!

Thanks for all the support and feedback!  We really appreciate it!  Stay tuned for new listings!!

Holy Video-palooza!

Hey Guys,

We just uploaded a bunch of videos that go through the whole process of fret installation and fret dressing!  They’re raw and in real time!  Use them for reference!  James leaves a lot of great notes to consider while installing and working with new frets!  Excuse some of the candidness and if there’s any overlap… well sorry about that too!  We’ll keep posting videos and get better as we continue on this adventure in building one of the guitars from our Luthier’s Corner Category!  Check it out!

Shipping Incentives Inbound!

Hey Guys!

We’ve been doing a lot better with accurate shipping quotes and are glad that those issues are starting to calm down. We’ve had to pull back a lot of our larger items though still, just because the shipping dwarfs the cost of the item anyway, and makes it seem unaffordable. Well, we got a call from UPS today, and they want to help with making the bigger stuff easier to ship after seeing a big decrease on our end in requests for oversized packages!

In the next week we hope to be able to give you the heads up on what gets a bonus incentive on shipping costs for oversized items and hopefully, we can get the big stuff loaded back on to the site, even some stuff you’ve never seen before! Also, the items that are pretty pricey for shipping now, may ultimately go down in price (oversized only) in the next week or so, so check back! I hope to have a formal announcement and all of our shipping indexes updated very soon!

New Video Up!

Hey Everyone!

We were finally able to get a portion of our video on fretting our guitar build from our very own ‘Luthier’s Corner’ up.  It’s not exactly what we were hoping for, but it does give the idea of what you need and what you can expect as far as time it will take to install frets on your own if you haven’t before.  We’re hoping later segments are going to be a little cleaner, we made the mistake of leaving the radio on in the background and ran into copywrite issues with Youtube.  Don’t wanna do that!  So we clipped the sound and let the video roll.  So some of the moments may seem misunderstood because there is no audio while James tries to explain more clearly on certain topics and steps in the process.  Anyway, Enjoy!

More Samples, Prototypes, Reference Amps Added to our Used Category!

Hi Guys!

I just added another handful of amps to the used category!  Some of these are realllly cool!  They sound and play great less one that we didn’t bother plugging in after not knowing the power supply needs.  There’s a range of gear, mostly unknown, but still very cool.  Some good deals and some items we’re looking for offers on!  Check it out!!
